Professional Development
SpeedStep
SpeedStep is an interactive computer aided software package primarily for textiles and graphics applications. This versatile design tool (based on ProSketch and ProPainter) assists the creation of concepts and designs for patterns, logos and other textile products. With a little imagination SpeedStep can be applied to all areas of design and technology.
Since 2002 The Department of Design at Goldsmiths has been a National support centre for SpeedStep in the UK. We offer focused training to potential CAD/CAM users across the design industry as well as technical and curriculum support for students, teachers and future trainers.
SpeedStep in Design: As a fashion and textile design tool, the Software assists the design process and can be combined with specific applications such as laser cutting technology, computerised Embroidery and small format digital printing. The latest version of the software allows designers to explore 3D virtual design possibilities.
SpeedStep in Education: As an educational tool, SpeedStep enables students’ ability to explore the use of pattern and colour combined with fabric design techniques, alongside presentation techniques for the development of D&T coursework for examination purposes.
SpeedStep training facilitates the learning of the software which can be used for individual use as well as for teaching purposes. We offer:
- Accredited Training Courses aimed at D&T teachers new to SpeedStep software. (As part of the the CAD/CAM in Schools Initiative, Funded by the DfES and endorsed by DATA)
- Refresher courses to bring users up-to-date with current applications of the software
- Specialised courses combining the use of the software with specific media such as: Laser cutting technology, Computerised Embroidery, Small format Digital Printing - using synthetic and natural fabrics
