Goldsmiths Coaching Programme
'The role of coach involves the skills of creating an environment where change can thrive, and bringing abilities to the surface by building up confidence and building upon capabilities.' Clarke (1993)
Why Coach?
Clarke refers to the role of the manager who, in order to respond to a changing environment, must create greater employee involvement and make things happen through people. The manager needs to develop three specific roles (what he calls 'survival skills') to do this - leader, coach and facilitator.
Be Coached
One to one coaching, either by a qualified internal coach or by one of our external associates is offered to Heads of Department, Senior Managers as well as to other staff across the College. All coaching at Goldsmiths is 'Voluntary, Non-Judgemental and Confidential'.
Become a Coach
Staff Development HR runs the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) accredited programmes:
* ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring in Management
* ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management Coaching
Both programmes are open to staff from other HEIs as well as to Goldsmiths staff who wish to apply. The programmes have a practical focus and once the first workshops are completed, participants begin to coach with the supervision of an experienced coach and support of a Coaching Practice Set. This creates immediate benefit to the organisation as participants coach colleagues as part of the course.
Spread the Word
Previous participants in the accredited programme have set up a Coaching Working Group to find ways of establishing a coaching culture at Goldsmiths. Contact Rody Bristow-Jones, Staff Development Manager or Vivienne Rose, Departmental Business Manager, PACE who is currently chairing the group to discuss ways this group can support you and you can contribute.
