MANAGING & DEVELOPING PEOPLE
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is essential for members of staff who assist with any aspect of the recruitment and selection of staff into Goldsmiths, including chairing a panel or acting as a panel member - even those with prior experience elsewhere.
Participants can opt to attend only the morning or afternoon depending on their prior level of experience and current need. One to one support can also be provided, please talk to your HR Business Partner or Staff Development HR to arrange.
About the workshop leader
Fiona McPhail is a staff development consultant and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (FCIPD). Her consultancy practice specialises in diversity, HR project work, and management development. She has worked with many universities as a trainer and to help with the framework agreement process.
Outline
This workshop will provide an overview of good practice in recruitment and selection as well as information on policy and procedures specific to Goldsmiths. The morning will ground participants in the wider process - the legal framework; equal opportunities and diversity; how best to prepare the person and job specifications for fairness and effectiveness. The afternoon session will take a closer look at using I-GRASP online recruitment, now in use in Goldsmiths. Then, in a practical session, participants will prepare for shortlisting and planning and conducting interview panels, including the role of the Chair and panel members. We will cover setting and asking competency based questions which draw out what you need to know and help your candidate to show themselves at their best.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Apply their knowledge of relevant policies and the legal framework to the recruitment and selection process
- avoid the pitfalls of 'getting it wrong' such as the employment tribunal, legal consequences and the adverse effects on the organisation and the new recruit
- know how I-GRASP is being used for recruitment and selection at Goldsmiths
- prepare job descriptions and person specifications that maximise successful recruitment
- effectively plan for shortlisting and the interview panel
- fulfil the role of panel member or Chair, including techniques for scoring the candidates answers
- structure and use competency-based questioning techniques that make for effective and fair interviews
- know how to follow the whole recruitment process fairly and without discrimination
- work with the HR Business Partners to design and run an Assessment Centre for senior staff recruitment
- practice or refresh their experience of planning and carrying out an interview.
