MANAGING & DEVELOPING PEOPLE

Who is this workshop for?
Any manager who feels they would benefit from being able to explore solutions to current problems, drawing on the collective experience of the participants and the workshop leader, based on a range of good practice techniques.

About the workshop leader
Sheelagh Hill has worked in Higher Education for 25 years, of which the last twelve were as Head of Staff Development at Brunel University. She now works freelance.

Outline
What is 'good' performance and how do we help people to develop and perform well in their role? Managing performance, universally, is one of the most important responsibilities for any manager – from a small office-based group to an international football team. Experienced, or not so experienced, qualified or developed ‘on the job’, those who manage others will benefit from this opportunity to reflect upon the issues and review practice in a supportive way with other workshop participants. We will explore skills and techniques to manage performance in the stages leading up to and following the Performance & Development Review (PDR)*. We will consider how to motivate, how to deal with behaviours that we may percieve as challenging and what good practice looks like in practice!

Outcomes
Following the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define and recognise good practice
  • link objectives and goals to motivation and good performance
  • utilise communication skills effectively in providing fair and constructive feedback
  • address and handle conflict more effectively to get the best out of individuals whose behaviour is perceived as challenging
  • create and maintain a fair and inclusive work environment.
