Who is this workshop for?
This workshop will be aimed at Academic staff, Departmental Senior Tutors, Administrators and Frontline staff as well as any group of staff who work closely with students and who may encounter students presenting with mental health difficulties.
About the workshop leaders
Rachel-Rose Burrell Murphy, Head of Counselling, and Barry Hayward, Disability Coordinator, who jointly lead the College's Mental Health Forum, devised and deliver this mental health awareness workshop to help staff deal with students presenting with mental health difficulties. Run with the support of Staff Development HR, workshops will be repeated throughout the Spring and Summer term.Outline
The workshop aim is to increase the confidence of staff in dealing with students presenting with mental health difficulties. The workshops will be centred on case studies of typical situations.
Outcomes
Following this one and a half hour workshop participants will have gained an understanding of:
- What is meant by mental health/illness
- how to deal more confidently with the particular situations discussed via case studies
- how to use effective communication skills
- Goldsmiths policies and the relevant legislation (DDA)
