PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Who is this workshop for?
All staff at Goldsmiths are entitled to have an annual Performance and Development Review. This workshop is for staff in administrative, support and manual roles who wish to take charge of their own personal and professional development and make best use of their annual PDR meeting. Please contact Staff Development HR if you would like to talk with us about running a workshop especially for staff in your department. We can run one for Reviewers only, for Reviewees only or a combined workshop and tailor the content to their needs.

About the workshop leader
Rody Bristow-Jones is a qualified coach and mediator and an experienced facilitator. She holds an MA in Media Technology Administration (strategic management for media organisations), an MSc in Human Resources Management and is a Member of the Institute of Leadership & Management (MInstLM). She was instrumental in writing and consulting with HR and TU colleagues on the most recent PDR policy agreed by Council.

Outline
We have to be honest, the Performance and Development Review process here, as in other HEIs, has not always matched expectations. This workshop aims to introduce the ethos of the new Performance & Development Review (PDR) policy - that all staff are entitled to have a PDR. In conjunction with workshops to support line managers, who are expected to deliver the annual PDR, these workshops will look at the policy; discuss what we mean by personal and professional development; and realistically but imaginatively assess the type of development opportunities that could be available to staff. The workshop will also focus on what to expect from, and how to manage, your PDR meeting and how we can get away from the idea that the PDR is a tick-box exercise to fill out a form.

Outcomes
Following this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how the PDR process helps in aligning your work objectives to those of your team or section, and the department's and organisation's goals
  • understand the key points of Goldsmiths' Performance & Development Review policy
  • make best use of communication skills to ensure you get the best out of your review
  • review your current responsibilities and flag up any changes
  • assess how well past objectives have been met and set new (SMART) ones
  • reflect upon and record your achievements and successes
  • identify barriers to achieving objectives
  • decide how to broach any difficult issues
  • reflect upon your personal and professional development and learning at work over the past year
  • consider ways to continue your personal and professional development (CPD)
  • use these skills and knowledge to deliver the PDR effectively to those you line manage.
