‘Useless, disposable pap’?
Fake poo, rubber chickens, a third eye; all items that epitomise that dreaded design word, ‘novelty’. But what about the joke shop’s, ability to trick, surprise, subvert expectations- as well as transforming an object from ‘real’ to ‘fake’?
Influenced by stand-up comedy, this project uses humour as a tool to expose truth behind the issues we avoid or forget.
The outcome: a series of conceptual props that inject serious issues into novelty objects. Existing through their film narratives, in performance these props reveal their context and function to the viewer, exchanging technical realism for conceptual models.
Prostitution, domestic violence, killing animals; can they ever work with novelty?
