ORBI: Ecosystem of Appliances
This system of household appliances replicates ecosystems by using common elements to generate various outcomes. Once obsolete, an appliance such as a hairdryer can be broken down and its constituent ‘nutrients’ used again by other appliances in situ, tightening the recycling loop, promoting the cyclical use of materials, and minimising impact on the environment. The flexible components facilitate user-driven design and unique outcomes, challenging stagnated object typologies and enhancing object-user relationships. Self-assembly by the user and bottom-up production reduces the waste flows generated by traditional manufacture. Incorporating the latest technology and materials, and falling somewhere between play, D.I.Y and first aid, this system inspires gender inclusive interaction with the domestic ecosystem.
