Permanent withdrawals
If you are withdrawn by your department for non-attendance, your tuition fees will be due in full.
If you withdraw within 3 weeks of the start of the autumn term, you will not be liable for any tuition fee payment to the college and any tuition fee loan you may have applied for will not be payable. However please note that if you withdraw after 3 weeks and before 1 December, you will incur a tuition fee liability. It is important to note that your tuition fee loan payment will not be made to the college if you are not in attendance as at the 1 December.
- For example, a student who withdraws after 6 weeks will have to pay £629. The tuition fee is calculated as follows: Total fee charged, £3145 divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 6 (the number of weeks attended)
If you withdraw after the 1 December your tuition fee loan will be payable. The college will calculate the amount of tuition fee owed for the number of weeks you have attended. The Student Loans Company will be informed of the revised amount and your tuition fee loan will be reduced accordingly.
- For example, a student who withdraws after 15 weeks of a 30 week course costing £3145. The fee charged would be £1573, calculated as follows: The college retains the total fee charged (£3145), divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 15 (the number of weeks attended). The college will inform the Student Loans Company of the new fee amount and they will adjust the student’s loan account accordingly.
If you have elected to pay your tuition fee yourself and you withdraw you will be liable for a pro rata tuition fee based on the number of weeks you attended as shown above.
Temporary withdrawals
A student who suspends their studies before the 1 December will be liable for a tuition fee for the period attended. Please note if you have accepted a tuition fee loan, this will not be paid to the college.
- For example, a student who suspends after 6 weeks will have to pay £629. The tuition fee is calculated as follows: Total fee charged, £3145 divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 6 (the number of weeks attended). If you have taken out a tuition fee loan, we will notify your local authority of the reduced fee, but this will not be paid to the college and you will incur a tuition fee liability.
If you suspend after the 1 December your tuition fee loan will be payable. The college will calculate the amount of tuition fee owed for the number of weeks you have attended. The Student Loans Company will be informed of the revised amount and your tuition fee loan will be reduced accordingly.
- For example, a student who withdraws after 15 weeks of a 30 week course costing £3145. The fee charged would be £1573, calculated as follows:The college keeps the total fee charged (£3145), divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 15 (the number of weeks attended). The college will inform the Student Loans Company of the new fee amount and they will adjust the student’s loan account accordingly.
Transfers
If a student transfers to another institution before the 1 December you will become liable for a tuition fee payment for the period attended at Goldsmiths College. This is because the tuition fee loan will not be paid to the College. The receiving institution will receive the full tuition fee payment and it is expected that they will pay a proportion of this fee to Goldsmiths College. However it is strongly recommended that you check what the policy is regarding fee payments with the institution you are transferring to.
If you are a student transferring after the 1 December, Goldsmiths College will receive the full tuition fee loan. We will calculate the fee due for the number of weeks attended, and on request from the institution you have transferred to, we will pay a pro- rata amount to them based on the number of weeks you were in attendance.
Refunds to students who have paid fees
If you have paid your tuition fee up front you will be refunded the amount in excess of the tuition fee charged for the period you have attended.
For example if you pay £3145 and withdraw after 15 weeks you will be charged £1573 and receive a refund of £1573 calculated as follows: The total fee charged (£3145), divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 15 (the number of weeks attended).
Please note that if you pay your tuition fee up front and subsequently change your mind and wish to take out or increase your tuition fee loan the College will not refund the fee you have already paid. This is because the Student Loan Company cannot authorise a further loan unless there is an outstanding fee to be paid. This means that you will only be able to apply for a tuition fee loan for the balance of any tuition fee owed. It is important therefore that you think carefully before you decide to pay your tuition fee up front.
Existing students
For existing students who started before 2006 the same rules apply but the calculation is based on the amount of tuition fee that you have been assessed to pay.
- For example an existing student who has been assessed to pay £1225 and who withdraws after 6 weeks will have to pay £245. The tuition fee is calculated as follows: Total fee charged £1225 divided by 30 (the course length in weeks), multiplied by 6 (the number of weeks attended).

If you withdraw within 3 weeks of the start of the autumn term, you will not be liable for any tuition fee payment to the college and any tuition fee loan you may have applied for will not be payable. For withdrawals after 3 weeks you will be charged for the number of weeks you were registered as a student of Goldsmiths.
- For example a student who withdraws after 6 weeks will be charged as follows: Total fee charged, divided by the course length in weeks, multiplied by 6.
If you paid your fee in full a refund will be made of any overpayment.
Temporary withdrawal
Tuition fees will be calculated as above. However if you have paid in full we would normally retain any overpayment to apply towards fees incurred when you return to study.
