This article was commissioned as part of a special edition of
Contemporary Theatre Review
focusing on The Director as Cultural Critic, to mark ten years of Max
Stafford-Clark’s production activity with Out of Joint. It includes new
interview material with Max Stafford-Clark and Mark Ravenhill, and
considers diverse aspects of Stafford-Clark’s practice with Out of
Joint, including his approach to rehearsal, and to proxemics and stage
