Dr Deirdre Osborne

After training as a classical ballet dancer, Deirdre Osborne studied Classics at the University of Melbourne, English Literature at Kings College London and completed her PhD at Birkbeck College, University of London in Victorian literature, where she also taught. Over the past fifteen years she has dedicated her research to Black British writing (prose, poetry and drama). She is committed to advocating this work in all areas of her teaching as a matter of social justice. She co-convenes the cross-disciplinary MA Black British Writing with Professor Joan Anim-Addo. It is a landmark as the first degree in the world that specialises in this field.

In general, her research embraces the Victorian period through to contemporary culture. She aims to retrieve the marginalised voices of the disenfranchised and dispossessed within this wide spectrum of genres and periods. Her ambitions are twofold: to recover a neglected dimension of women’s participation in Victorian colonisation by foregrounding a maternal aesthetics (for which she was Australian Bicentennial Scholar); to develop a critical discourse which reconfigures British literary and dramatic history by centralizing black writers’ work. A particular research focus is on debbie tucker green’s innovative dramatic-poetics and women’s experimental writing. This extends into exploring adoption aesthetics, mixedness and generic form through monodrama and what Deirdre has coined, “Landmark Poetics”.

She is Associate Editor of Women’s Writing 1558-1918 (Taylor and Francis)

Her organisation of public-facing cultural events at Goldsmiths includes:

2008 On Whose Terms?: Critical Negotiations in Black British Literature and the Arts

2010 Women, Creativity and Dissidence: A Three-day Workshop with Nawal el Saadawi (with SABLE litmag.)

2012 D-Day; Celebrating Diane Abbott’s 25 Years as an MP

2013 Renegade Raconteurs I: An Evening with Darcus Howe

2014 The six-part Black British Writers in Conversation Series

2015 Black, Bitter and Beautiful: Poets against Brutality(with Kadija George)

‘Women, Dissidence and Hope’ Nawal el Saadawi in Conversation

She has chaired numerous panels for the National Theatre, Tricycle Theatre and The Albany and has spoken on her work internationally including universities in Germany, the United States, and Australia. While deputy Head of Education at HMP Wandsworth she concurrently developed her interests in prison theatre. In 2001 Roger Graef’s Artistic Convictions television series featured a documentary film about her production of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba with the women of HMP Holloway, directed by Lucy Fyson.

Inquiries about research supervision are welcome in any of the following areas: performance poetics, trans-generic writing, Black British writing, dramatic poetics, Landmark Poetics, the late-Victorian period and colonial ideology, woman and war, gender and prisons, motherhood and nation-building.
