Interview and/or submission of a portfolio of written work.
Most of our graduates choose careers in fields related to their musical knowledge: teaching, performing, arts administration, music librarianship, publishing and retailing, record companies and production, or technical work in radio or television. Statistically, music graduates demonstrate very good employment rates, because they are often highly trained in the kinds of transferable skills employers are seeking: individual motivation, team working, and effective communication.
Please see Undergraduate tuition fees.
Music
The foundation year has four components:
What you Study
Practical Music, which includes individual tuition as well as aural training and other practical skills.
Techniques and Composition, which introduces you to foundational analytical and compositional work.
Literature of Music, which gives you an introduction to the broad range of Western art music history.
English Language Skills, delivered by the Language Studies Centre at Goldsmiths, designed to give you the language skills necessary to comfortably undertake the first year of the BMus degree.
Please note: the Extension Degree is designed to provide entry onto the BMus Music programme only, not the BMus in Popular Music. Progression onto the Popular Music programme is not automatic, but may be granted in exceptional circumstances, subject to satisfactory interview and audition.
Assessment
Coursework, take-away and aural papers, and a practical skills examination. You must pass all compulsory elements of the degree, and if you complete the foundation year successfully, you proceed to the next year of the BMus in Music degree. Foundation year results do not contribute to the overall classification of your BMus in Music degree.
