What is a PhD in Visual Anthropology?

This is probably more accurately described as a ‘PhD in anthropology with visual content’. Candidates are required to produce a thesis slightly shorter than a normal PhD thesis, and either a film or a portfolio of still photographs. A film or photography portfolio does not substitute for a written thesis, but is a complementary artefact that also has stand-alone qualities. A normal anthropology PhD may also be submitted with ancillary/complementary image material, the difference between such a thesis and a visual one being that in the latter case, the visual material is central to the research aims and objectives.
