FAQs
What is the difference between the MRes in Visual Anthropology and the MA in Visual Anthropology?
The MRes in Visual Anthropology is identical to the normal MRes with a Visual Practice component substituting for the Quantitative Methods component. In general, the MRes degree is more concerned with 1. general methodological issues in anthropology and 2. research project preparation and design, and although it is typically the first year of a three/four year PhD programme, a formal degree is granted after one-year of study (two years part-time). The MA in Visual Anthropology is more intense in terms of anthropological theory specific to image and represesntation and in terms of visual practice, and hence provides little room for research preparation, although it may well serve as the first (training) year for students intending to carry on and pursue an Mphil/PhD programme. For students intending to pursue a research degree after either the MRes or MAVIS, the suitability of either path is a matter for discussion at the time of interview and through consultation with prospective supervisors and the Departmental Post-Graduate Tutor.
