Go Abroad

Description

This student applied to study for a term at a partner university abroad and was successfully nominated by their home department at Goldsmiths. Funded by the Turing Scheme (Department for Education), students spent 3-6 months at a partner abroad immersed in another country and higher education setting.

Through this, the student gains confidence and possesses the potential for increased academic achievement upon their return. A term abroad also reflects a resilient nature as to organise it, students complete paperwork, choose modules and organise their year at Goldsmiths in advance.

Criteria

  • Good academic standing and evidence motivation to study abroad in application to study abroad
  • Collaborate with academic department at Goldsmiths and the host university to arrange modules to be completed abroad
  • Be insured through Goldsmiths travel insurance
  • Confidence to live and study abroad

Description

This student has successfully applied for a competitive Go Abroad Traineeship, and completed a self-procured overseas work placement of at least 28 days requiring a collaborative work ethic with strong organisational and communication skills. The placement enables development of enhanced cultural competency and employable skills with focused self-reflection.

Criteria

  • Researched appropriate overseas employers and secured full-time traineeship (1-month minimum)
  • Submitted a successful application for funding to undertake the Go Abroad Traineeship
  • Liaised with Goldsmiths and Host Employer staff to agree your programme of training at the Host Organisation
  • Followed the eligibility rules outlined by Goldsmiths to ensure the traineeship sourced could be funded
  • Were insured for the duration of your traineeship
  • Completed the Go Abroad documents and critically self-reflect on your placement through the Traineeship Agreement and Post-Completion Questionnaire
  • Acted as an ambassador for Goldsmiths in their place of training
  • Maintained regular communications with all involved parties
  • Successfully carried out your complete mobility of traineeship period, as planned

Theatre and Performance

Description

This student has planned, promoted and facilitated a series of theatre workshops with a community group in an outreach setting. They have gained skills in organising and promoting projects, managing groups of people, workshop facilitation and time management.

Criteria

  • Complete 24 hours over 6 weeks planning, promoting and facilitating a series of workshops which are delivered in community settings
  • Provide a written reflection on your professional practice
  • Produce a portfolio of evidence, to include photos, to demonstrate your process

Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance

Description

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is China’s only standardized Chinese Proficiency test for non-native speakers.  Students studying Mandarin at Goldsmiths can take HSK tests to have formal qualification proving their Chinese proficiency level.  These tests are separate from their degree studies and are studied for outside of their academic programme showing their independent learning as well as their foreign language skills.

There is a cost involved if you wish to take one or more of these tests.

Level 1: Basic

Level 2: Elementary

Level 3: Lower Intermediate

Level 4: Intermediate

Level 5: Upper Intermediate

Level 6: Advanced

Criteria

Take and pass an HSK test (of any level 1-6) while studying at Goldsmiths

Description

Students to travel to China for two weeks and learn Mandarin and explore Chinese culture and history.  In China, students take courses in Mandarin, calligraphy, Chinese painting and martial arts.  They also visit famous historical and political sites.  Participants develop foreign language skills, as well as cultural awareness and understanding. 

Criteria

  • Attend language preparation course in advance of the trip
  • Complete the camp
  • Submit a reflection essay on their experience within one month of returning (max 750 words)

More information on the China Cultural Exchange 

Description

Students will help in the production of a variety of events including theatre performances, film screenings and the Chinese New Year show. Through this activity students learn the ins and outs of production assistance alongside frontline industry professionals. Alongside gaining operational event management experience they will have gained skills in organization, time management and team work.

Criteria

  • Attend rehearsals leading up to main event
  • Volunteer for a total of 15 hours within one academic year
