The figure of speech : the politics of contemporary chatter
My work is concerned with the potential fictional and imaginative reading of ‘accurate’ and ‘explained’ accounts of events that we do not witness ourselves. My practice, using drawing, collage, sculpture, video and installation often develops through a period of research relating to a specific subject or event. This information is often subverted or playfully deconstructed and re-presented, introducing alternative narratives to the original material. My theoretical research investigates whether orally produced rumour, often seen as negative, or ‘bad’ information, is in fact a positive document acting as a site of communication where a public has control of both medium and message, functioning in direct opposition to autocratic control of information held by global media organisations.
