Event overview
Continuing on with our Athena SWAN journey, we are holding an event open to students, staff and guests at Goldsmiths.
Professor Lauren Stewart (Goldsmiths, University of London) will speak about careers of parents in UK academia and Dr Frances Negrón-Muntaner (Columbia University) will discuss the state of diversity in US academia.
Schedule for the event:
- 1:00 – 1:10 Introduction from Professor Jane Powell, Deputy Warden & Chair of Goldsmiths Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team.
- 1:10 – 1: 25 Speaker 1 (and Q&A) – Professor Lauren Stewart – Professor, Department of Psychology, Goldsmiths, University of London.
Title of presentation: 'Parenting and Academia: a pilot survey’
A small survey was compiled in 2013 to acquire quantitative and qualitative data from academics (at all levels of seniority, across a range of institutions) who are also parents. Professor Lauren Stewart and her team sought information about a variety of issues including length of parental leave taken, availability of flexible working and whether this was taken, the perceived benefits or costs to work of being a parent, and the aspects of working environment that facilitate being a working parent. While the initial survey focused on mothers, a follow up survey with fathers allows a comparative perspective in a few key areas.
- 1:25 – 1:55 Speaker 2 (and Q&A) – Dr Frances Negrón-Muntaner– Professor, Department of English and Comparative Literature and Director of Columbia University's Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.
Title of presentation: ‘Current state of diversity in US academia’
Dr Frances Negrón-Muntaner will discuss the current state of diversity in US academia, the implications of the term diversity (no longer affirmative action and not equality), the growing legal challenges to diversity in higher education, and how increased diversity addresses some issues but raises new ones.
- 1:55 – 2:00 Closing remarks from Professor Jane Powell, Deputy Warden & Chair of Goldsmiths Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team.
