Increasing teachers' professional development through digital technology in rural modern China. By Associate Professor Zhong Sun, Capital Normal University, Beijing.
China has had to come face to face with an ill-structured economic development plan, the effects of which have been experienced on a nationwide level. In order to improve the quality of national education services, teachers from high-poverty rural areas must be provided with more effective aids to their professional development. Mobile Internet has made it possible for teachers from all areas - no matter how rural the school is in which they work, or how poor the quality of their school computers - to gain access to these aids.
Associate Professor Zhong Sun’s research team at the Informational Engineering College (IEC) of Capital Normal University in Beijing has built mobile teacher communities via WeChat and MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). This has been possible due to almost all rural teachers in China now having relatively easy access to a low-cost smart phone and the free mobile application, WeChat. Almost 1,000 rural teachers from high-poverty areas in China have participated in this blended MOOC over the past two years with only a 50% drop out rate. This lecture will introduce the essential processes of developing such an online learning network and reveal the reasons behind its positive outcomes.
Please note that we recommend downloading the free mobile application, WeChat, in preparation for this lecture.
