A writing workshop at Goldsmiths Allotment, followed by the Garlick Man Parade and readings at The Word Bookshop
Writing Workshop at Goldsmiths Allotment
2:00 - 5:00pm
Dr Francis Gilbert (Department of Education and Creative Writing) and Seraphima Kennedy (Director of NAWE) will be running activities to inspire writing about the Solstice, summer and nature. Participants will be encouraged to respond to the plants, animals and objects on the allotment through poems, life writing or fiction.
Garlick Man Parade
Arrive at 4.45pm for departure at 5:00pm
Come in costume and with musical instruments to join the Garlick Man Parade to awaken the spirits of the earth and summer, and to celebrate community. Setting off from the Allotment with the Old Nag of New Cross we will join the Garlick Man and his contingent as they wind through the streets of New Cross up to Telegraph Hill, or as it used to be known, ‘Plow’d Garlick Hill’. The ‘marriage’ of the Garlick Man and the Old Nag takes place in the top park at the top of Telegraph Hill, and celebrations continue at The Hill Station Cafe.
The Word Bookshop, 314 New Cross Road
6.30-8.30pm
Blue Door Press and NAWE host longer readings by Francis Gilbert, who will read from his novel Who Do You Love (BDP, 2017), Ian McAuley, and Seraphima Kennedy of NAWE, who will lead some writing exercises. There will be an ‘open mic’ for anyone to read from work they wish to share.
