Event overview
Lewisham Choral Society presents an evening of majestic music for choir, piano and orchestra by Mozart and Haydn
Lewisham Choral Society presents a regal extravaganza of choral and orchestral music by Haydn and Mozart. It is easy to see why Mozart’s glorious Coronation Mass became a particular favourite of the Viennese court and is today still one of his most prized sacred works. This same court later commissioned Haydn to compose his rousing Te Deum in C for the Emperor’s wife, Maria Theresa. Haydn’s delightful motet Insanae et vanae curae has a dramatic opening and a lyrical conclusion and is a firm favourite with singers and audiences. Tonight’s pianist, Nico de Villiers, who gave a stunning performance of Mozart’s ‘Elvira Madigan’ concerto at Goldsmiths last year, returns to play the darker tones of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20. The choir is accompanied by the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dan Ludford -Thomas.
We are one of London’s most accomplished and lively community choirs, with around 200 voices, producing a rich choral sound. We perform regularly at Goldsmiths and at venues across London such as the Southbank Centre and Cadogan Hall. We have participated in a wide range of events, including productions at the Young Vic and the Paralympic Games opening ceremony in 2012. We are currently involved in a modern opera ‘Mozart and the Machine’ and last year collaborated with punk group ‘The Membranes’. Our talented director, Dan Ludford-Thomas is a teacher, conductor and choral director of LCS, Hackney Singers, Concordia Chamber Choir and the NHS choir, coaching them in the BBC’s ‘The Choir’. Award-winning pianist Nico de Villiers has performed widely in the UK, Europe, South Africa, the USA and China. The Forest Philharmonic is one of London’s most popular community orchestras and has performed with LCS at the Festival Hall and other major venues.
Our concert showcases some of Mozart and Haydn’s most glorious music. We are really enjoying our rehearsals and we are sure you will enjoy listening!
