Event overview
Talk by Professor John Lechte (Emeritus Professor of Sociology, Macquarie University)
In this paper I will first all present an overview of the main theme of my book, The Human (2018), giving particular emphasis to the way that the notion the human as essentially bare life (as essentially animality, in effect) has been pervasive in the work a range of thinkers, such as Hegel, Schelling, Heidegger and Bataille. I will then focus on the notion of technics and bare life in the thought of Bernard Stiegler and Gilbert Simondon, the theme of Chapter 8 of The Human. Despite the sophistication and originality of their respective approaches to technics, it will be found that Stiegler and Simondon also reduce the human to bare life.
This talk is hosted by the Research Unit for Contemporary Political Theory in the Department of Politics and IR.
