Co-Curating Pain
Exploring two case studies of collaborative curation projects held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Rachael Minott will explore some of the ethical questions which occur when co-curating difficult histories with people whom these stories have personal significance. The first case study The Past is Now: Birmingham and the British Empire (Oct 2017- June 2018) was an experiment in decolonial co-curation by working with self identified activist to tell the story of the British Empire from the perspective of the colonised. The second case study Within and Without: Body Image and the Self (July 2018- Feb 2019), which explored collaboratively curating responses to absence and exclusion of diverse bodies in communal spaces of learning.
