Event overview
Statecraft; Or, Anytime Someone Tries to Do Something Radical in Berlin She is Hindered by Someone More Radical
REALTY is a long-term curatorial effort to take Contemporary Art’s political claims at face value. The aim here is not to berate the artworld’s track record in light of stated progressive aims, but to assess the possibilities it still has to pursue them. More concretely, REALTY is invested in artistic and curatorial strategies which proactively tackle Contemporary Art’s complicity with gentrification.
Most recently, REALTY played a key role in the STATISTA initiative on Alexanderplatz Berlin, where the emphasis has been on artists building durable infrastructures that redistribute financial and cultural capital – this among constituencies beyond artists alone. The talk will foreground the STATISTA episode, reviewing the development of REALTY at large, in light of its tussles with organizers, policymakers and the real estate sector.
