Event overview
After a summer hiatus the Femxle Football Reading Group is back and we're going meta... asking 'what is sport?' by exploring writing by Roland Barthes and Hito Steyerl.
The Femxle Football Reading Group has been established as part of a larger curatorial project, Against the Run of Play. A programme of screenings, workshops and art events, the public output of the project took place in the lead up to and during the FIFA Women's World Cup in the summer of 2019.
The aim of this reading group is to map and give critical context to barriers, social (mis)conceptions and achievements of femxles within football, the broader field of sport and sports culture.
We meet on a monthly basis, with each session framed by an overarching theme, which is decided upon at the end of the previous session. These could range from socio-political questions around gender, race and capital, to thinking about spectatorship and the role of culture or friendship. Those that attend the reading group are warmly invited to suggest texts and specific topics; we want this to be a discursive research tool which is shaped collectively and conversationally.
The Reading Group is open to all backgrounds and genders; footballer, artist, both or neither - we are interested in everybody’s contribution to the discussion.
