Event overview
The life of a young recruit in Myanmar's Shan rebellion.
Soil Without Land (2019) is a documentary film by Thai filmmaker Nontawat Numbenchapol. The film follows the life of Jai Sang Lod, a young recruit of the Shan State Army, an ethnonational rebel movement in Myanmar. Based on exceptional long-term access, Numbenchapol sheds rare and intimate light on the harsh process of recruitment and socialisation in revolutionary movements as well as the tensions between individual aspirations and collective ideologies.
The film screening is organised by the Centre for Postcolonial Studies and the Department of Politics and International Relations at Goldsmiths. It will be followed by a discussion with Dr Hans Steinmüller, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the LSE, who researches the politics of conscription in the United Wa State Army in Myanmar.
