Event overview
Becca Voelcker delivers our sixth talk 'Land Cinema: Film in an Age of Extraction'. Monday 9th February, 5.30 - 7 pm, LG.02 PSH
Considering film’s political urgency in times of environmental crisis, and how past moments of rupture contain seeds of ideas for our present, this talk coincides with the publication of Becca Voelcker’s book Land Cinema in an Age of Extraction (University of California Press, 2026). Diving into little-known archives to explore films that resonate across geographies, the book unearths key examples of eco-political counterculture, from filmed garden diaries to indigenous documentaries on farmers’ rights, each of which advances an understanding of land as a locus of social and environmental responsibility.
