Travis Kong (University of Hong Kong)

Based on narratives using an oral history method, this paper discusses how same-sex intimacy is negotiated in everyday sites across time. By analysing the radical use of space, it will show how a queer counter-public can be imagined, created and practiced in both heterosexual and homosexual worlds. By challenging the public/private forms of intimacy this paper re-thinks queer liberation and re-examines the future direction of queer politics and movement.

Travis S. K. Kong is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. He is on the international advisory editorial board of Sexualities: Studies in Culture and Society. He is the author of Chinese Male Homosexualities: Memba, Tongzhi and Golden Boy (2011)
