Mark Barden started his research at the CCMC after being awarded the highly competitive Goldsmiths PhD student scholarship. Other recent awards include the Akademie der Kuenste Berlin (Berlin Academy of the Arts) Felllowship 2010, and a Scholarship Prize for 2012 Darmstadt Summer Courses.
Marks’s recent performances include gauze I & II for nine instruments, performed at the Konzerthaus Berlin by the Zafraan Ensemble (April 2010), viscera for viola, cello, and double bass, performed at Darmstadt Summer Courses by the Fathom Trio (July 2010), Chamber for three amplified, untrained male voices, at ZKM Karlsruhe, International Ensemble Modern Academy (Sept 2010) and anatomy for large orchestra and percussion soloist, performed at the Musikhochschule Freiburg, by the Hochschulorchester Freiburg and Nicholas Reed, percussionist (Nov 2010).
Future projects include commissions from Ensemble Eecherche and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Darmstadt Summer Courses (International Music Institute Darmstadt), Donaueschingen Festival, a new work for Ensemble Nikel and Berlin State Senate and a new work for the Berlin Chamber Players string ensemble.
MPhil/PhD student composer Pedro Alvarez was selected to attend as active participant to Centre Acanthes (Metz, France) last July, where he received tuition from composers Beat Furrer, Hanspeter Kyburz and Tristan Murail. His work Interalia, especially written for the occasion, was presented at the workshops of the Orchestre National de Lorraine, conducted by Jean Deroyer. Following Acanthes, Alvarez attended to the 45. Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt (July 17-31), where his work Étude Oblique I was presented by the Arditti String Quartet at their Reading Sessions. Also his work Silente (Étude Oblique IIIc) was selected for the Cello Composition Workshop (prof. Lucas Fels and Hans Thomalla). In Darmstadt he received tuition from Brian Ferneyhough, Geroges Aperghis, Liza Lim and Manos Tsangaris among other composers.
Her work contemplates the theoretical writings and philosophy of Ancient Greek musicians in order to create new music springing from the past. Her research has earned her places in conferences such as the Annual Music Graduate Exchange Conference for the East and South East of England, Oxford University, presenting the Reconstruction of the Music of Euripides as well as her article New Compositional Techniques Linked to Ancient Greek Music being part of the publication made from the proceedings of the 2nd International Conference for PhD Music Students, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki Greece, in association with University of Edinburgh, UK.
Her composition Erosion was premiered by violinist Mizuka Yamamoto at the The Athens Composer/Performer Conference for PhD Students in Co-operation with Goldsmiths, University of London and St. Catherine’s British Embassy School, Athens, Greece which she organized with the aid of Roger Redgate who was keynote speaker and chair of the conference. Her composition was presented again by Mizuka Yamamoto at the PLG Young Composer’s symposium at the Royal Festival Hall in November of 2009. Her latest composition Andromache was written for quarter-tone Alto flautist Carla Rees as part of the RMA/ University of Leeds Study Day in Collaborative Research which she premiered in 2010. She also presented a piano work written for her by composer Ray Evanoff as part of the same study day. As a pianist she aims to interpret new works in order to encourage composers to write and contribute to the piano repertoire. She has premiered works by Eric Marty, Neil March, Paul Sarcich, Ray Evanoff, Walter Cardew as well as her own compositions.
