Prior to taking up the helm of Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performing Arts, Shuai has worked in several UK universities over the last 13 years. After completion of doctoral research in Applied Linguistics, he further developed research interests in translation and interpreting studies, cross cultural communication, Chinese studies and language pedagogy. Shuai's previous research work has been published by various academic publishers, such as Routledge. Having been awarded the Higher Education Fellowship, he has also been appointed as an external examiner in UK higher education institutions and a visiting Professor in overseas universities.
Aside from academic Mandarin language interests, Shuai has also been actively involved in Chinese dance and performing arts as an artistic director.
