John is a senior lecturer in Education in the Department of Educational Studies. He joined the department in 2001 as a teacher fellow and became a lecturer the following year. He has worked as an assessor and mentor for the National Professional Qualification for Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL - London) and as an assessor for the Early Years Professional Status in partnership with London Metropolitan University. More recently, John has produced parental guidance for CBeebies International and acted as an educational consultant for a start-up producing educational apps for under-fives.

Teaching

John has a particular interest and expertise in the area of Early Childhood Education and contributes to the PGCE programme, the BA Education, Culture and Society degree and the MA programme.

Professional projects

John is currently Vice Chair of Governors of a Comprehensive secondary school and current President of Goldsmiths UCU.

Before coming to Goldsmiths, John spent 17 years as a nursery teacher working in maintained Nursery schools and classes in South -East London. He spent 14 years as a deputy head and in 1989 was seconded for a year by the ILEA to work as an Advisory Teacher for Gender Equality. John was also a member of the working group that developed the curriculum entitlement section of the Greenwich Education Service equal opportunities policy in 1992. From 1990 he was an Officer of the Greenwich branch of the NUT and represented the union on the Council's education committee following the abolition of the ILEA. In 1996 he was seconded as Nursery Head teacher and was instrumental in developing the outline proposal for the development of the school as an integrated Early Years Centre. From 1997 - 2001, John was an OFSTED Registered Nursery Inspector.
