Replacing Lost and Incorrect Visas

Replacing your visa if you lost it outside of the UK

Report it

Report it to the Home Office using their online form.

Step 1

Once you have reported your visa as lost or stolen, it will be cancelled. You cannot undo this cancellation, even if you find your visa. You should make sure you have looked for your visa before you report it to the Home Office.

Contact us

Contact the Immigration Advisory Service for advice about the process overseas by emailing immigration(@gold).ac.uk

Step 2

If you need help with the process you can get in touch with us. We can explain how to obtain a temporary replacement visa to help you travel back to the UK and offer you an appointment when you are in the UK to apply for a full replacement visa.

Apply for a single entry visa overseas

Visit the Home Office webpages to apply for a temporary (one time) entry visa, selecting 'other' as the reason for your visit, 'others' as the visa type and 'replacement biometric residence permit' as the visa sub type.

Step 3

If you need to replace your visa overseas you initially apply for a single entry visa and then when you return to the UK you apply for a full replacement BRP. You cannot apply for a replacement BRP overseas.

Be aware

You must apply for your replacement visa as soon as you get back to the UK and definitely within three months of your return.

Step 4

This will allow you to travel to the UK, but when you arrive you will then need to apply for a replacement Biometric Residence Permit. We recommend that you contact the IAS if you lose your visa overseas, and we can help you with the single entry visa process. You should not try to travel to the UK until you have a replacement student visa.

Step 1

When applying for a replacement visa inside the UK your original visa expiry date shouldn’t be within the next 4 weeks. The Home Office will not issue a replacement to you if there is less than 4 weeks left on your original visa. Contact the IAS if you are unsure about this.

Prepare

Start to prepare your replacement visa application form, but do not submit it before you have spoken to us about your application.

Step 2

Once you have reported your visa as lost or stolen, it will be cancelled. You cannot undo this cancellation, even if you find your visa. You should make sure you have looked for your visa before you report it to the Home Office.

Be informed

You cannot travel outside of the UK until you have your replacement visa, and you must apply for your replacement visa within 3 months of losing it.

Step 3

It can take a few months to obtain a new visa, but there are priority appointments available and we can advise you about this when you get in touch.

Occasionally there may be mistakes on your student visa. If any of the following information is incorrect then we can normally help you to update your visa: your name, date of birth or gender, your visa start or end date, working conditions, for example it might say you can only work for 10 hours per week maximum when it should say 20 hours and police registration requirements.
