Replacing a lost visa in the UK

What to do if you lose your visa inside the UK.

Primary page content

We have made some temporary changes to our process because of the Coronavirus. We can still help guide you through the process if you have recently lost your visa and you are unsure what to do next.

You must apply for your BRP replacement within 3 months of losing it.

The Home Office will not issue a replacement to you if there are less than 4 weeks left on your original visa. This process can only be followed if you have lost your visa, if you are looking for information about extending your visa because of issues relating to coronavirus, visit our dedicated webpage or contact us if you are unsure about this.

Step 1 - Contact us

Complete our online form so that we can help you. The Immigration Advisory Service will contact you to discuss your next steps.

Step 2 - Prepare your application

Start to prepare your BRP replacement application form, but you should not submit it before you have spoken to us about your application.

Make sure you have looked for your visa first before you report it to the Home Office because you cannot undo this cancellation, even if you find your visa.

Report your visa as lost or stolen to the Home Office using their online reporting form. This will cancel your visa so it can no longer be used.

Step 3 - Book a virtual appointment with us

We will invite you to attend an appointment virtually so that we can check your form with you and help you submit it online.

Once you have submitted your application, you should not normally travel outside of the UK even if you are able to travel (for example, once any travel restrictions have been removed you should not leave the UK if you have a pending visa replacement application, let us know urgently if you need to travel).

Step 4 - Attend an appointment with a visa centre (once the visa centres re-open)

Due to coronavirus, you may not be able to book an appointment to enrol your biometric details, however we can still help you submit your application as normal.

There are legal requirements to follow if you lose your visa, even if the visa centres are closed. Your application will not be affected by the centres closing so it is safest to submit the application with our help as soon as you can and we will advise you about your personal circumstances.

Once the centres re-open, we will get in touch with you to help you book an appointment at a visa centre and upload your documents to Sopra Steria’s portal.
