Philip Palmer is a creative writing practitioner with extensive experience in TV, film, novels and radio.

I am a creative writing tutor working at MA and BA levels. I convene and teach the MA Script Writing and associated modules and I co-convene and also teach on all the Creative Writing modules on the BA Media and Communications and BA Media and English.

As a practitioner I have extensive experience in many media forms and I am also a film producer. I am a published science fiction novelist and a leading audio drama writer with nearly 80 BBC Radio broadcast credits. My feature film THE BALLAD OF BILLY McCRAE which I wrote and co-produced was given a theatrical and digital release internationally in 2021.

Professional Experience in the Arts

FILM:
I am co-producer and writer of the feature film THE BALLAD OF BILLY McCRAE, starring David Hayman, Sianad Gregory and Ian Virgo, and directed by Chris Crow.

This film was distributed internationally by Gravitas Entertainment and Munro Films and was released on 22 screens in 2021. It was showcased at the Kingston International Film Festival in 2022.

I have written extensively for BBC Radio Drama with credits including; 5 series of the Hungarian Cold War thriller KEEPING THE WOLF OUT; 3 series of the wargames drama RED AND BLUE; 2 series of the art fraud thriller THE ART OF DECEPTION; 2 episodes of my adaptation of Spenser's FAERIE QUEENE starring Simon Russell Beale; and numerous other single dramas including THE KING'S COINER starring Ian McDiarmid.

My TV drama credits include REBUS: THE HANGING GARDEN (2 hour thriller), THE MANY LIVES OF ALBERT WALKER (90 minute BBC 1 film), HEARTBEAT, and THE BILL. I have also worked a script editor and head of development in television with credits including the ITV drama BACK HOME starring Sarah Lancashire, the police drama TAGGART and SEE SAW written by Deborah Moggach.

I am an established and internationally recognised science fiction novelist with six novels in print including RED CLAW, VERSION 43 (for Orbit Books) and HELL ON EARTH (for Hell Books), as well as a novella MORPHO (New Con Press) and a number of short stories.

I am a member of BAFTA and serve on the Film Committee of the Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB).
