Dr Bonamy Oliver

Bonamy is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmiths and director of the Nurture Lab. She is a developmental psychologist and behavioural geneticist, with diverse research and applied experience. To academic and non-academic audiences, she champions the need to assimilate scientific approaches to better understand the role of family processes in children’s mental health and wellbeing. She has innovated and developed methodologies, including a novel, cost-effective and eco-friendly method for collecting parent-child observations, and an assessment considered for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. She collaborates on a number of large-scale UK studies as well as leading in-depth studies of family processes. Her work ambitions are to broaden the reach of family research and of interventions for improving children's mental health. Bonamy has appeared on ITV1, Radio 4 and in the UK press.

Academic qualifications

  • Ph.D Psychology and Behavioural Genetics, King's College London 2006

Teaching and Supervision

  • PhD, MSc and Y3 research project supervision

Research interests

Bonamy's research centres on the study of family processes - particularly parent-child and sibling relationships - in relation to children's mental health and wellbeing. She focuses on using family and twin designs to better understand the role of children’s experiences and family intervention, commonly within genetically-sensitive designs.

Specific areas of interest:
• Parenting and parent-child relationships
• Sibling relationships
• Children’s mental health/wellbeing (particularly conduct problems)
• Behavioural genetics
• Family Interventions
