SSO#2: A whole day/night devoted to sound system culture worldwide

This event was hosted at Goldsmiths on 2 July 2016 as part of the Sound System Outernational conference series.

Sound System Outernational 2 brought together sound system men and women, younger and older, researchers and engineers, performers and industry professionals from across the UK and Brazil, Italy and Jamaica.

Highlights

  • Intergenerational conversations between pioneering veteran of the UK scene Sir Lloydie Coxonne and Legs Eleven, a younger generation of female sound system owners and operators
  • Engineering demonstrations including one from Manu Falticksa aka Anti-Bypass (Dub Addict Sound System – Lyon, France) showing how to operate his custom-modified world of dub electronics
  • Equipment showcase with Jim Frize (De Montfort University) of his 12-volt Sound System. Jim talked about his design work and technology that went into it building the set and how people can get involved in this emerging sub-culture
  • Reggae Exhibition of Southend-on Sea (Derry Hall and Dr Kenny Monrose aka the TDK partnership). Dr. Monrose and Derry Hall shared artefacts from the town’s sound history
  • Film screening of I’m Ugly but Trendy (Brazil/UK – 59 min). Bruno Verner & Eliete Mejorado (Tetine / Slum Dunk) introduced this film by Denise Garcia
  • After-conference sound system session at the Amersham arms with Young Warrior: The Mighty Son of Jah Shaka, Roots Injection Sound System: Ras Muffet (Roots Injections, Bristol) at the Controls and Guest Selector Don Letts: The Rebel Dread
