losing ground (introducing lightness)

‘...literature as an existential function, the search for lightness as a reaction to the weight of living.’

- Italo Calvino, Six Memos for the Next Millennium.

This project is about the sensation of lightness and levitation. The aim is to alter mundane situations by designing and introducing objects that evoke these sensations.

I researched the physical and non-physical qualities of lightness and tried to build poetic contexts around these. Main themes that emerged were balance and suspension, which I explored by revealing their relieving attributes. A major inspirational source came from the world of magic. In a similar way to a magician I created objects that illustrate extraordinary events, however my ideas are different as I am not hiding the tricks.

The idea of the project is to illustrate and recreate sensations of lightness in everyday life, similar to those experienced when flying a parachute or being weightless in space. I tried to bring these experiences into different contexts and situations such as the daily commute to work and life around the house in order to alleviate the mundane.
