Goldsmiths At War: Goldsmithian December 1914

Article

The Goldsmithian was Goldsmiths College’s first magazine. In its inaugural issue (June 1906) its hopes were to publish articles ‘upon various topics grave and gay, which will appeal to all students’.

"Smiths! We are at the end of the first term of yet another year -possibly the most momentous in our Island story. We are anticipating the vacation which should usher in a season of peace and Goodwill. Alas! Ours ears are deafened by the booming of cannon, the clash of steel, and the lamentation of war-stricken nations."

This ‘grave and gay’ tone is certainly evident it the December 1914 issue. The magazine was, of course, dominated by the outbreak of war, however, the editorial stance remained hopeful and proud of those students who had answered ‘their country’s call’.
