The film by artist Margaret Jennings celebrating the voluntary-run New Cross Learning and its vital community projects. Part of Deptford X Fringe 2017
Based on the rich tapestry of learning, education and sharing opportunities in S.E. London’s New Cross Learning, (NXL), a voluntary run library managed by the dedicated commitment of Kath and Gill, there is cause to celebrate; another 7 years lease has been granted by Lewisham Council. NXL can now continue following on from these past very successful 5 years dedicated voluntary work.
In this community, socially engaged and experimental artwork I have endeavored to collate an Alive Archive representing something of the diversity of NXL. Alive Archive As Now is offered as a tool for celebration and understanding, expressing something of these vibrant everyday community driven projects, practical, informative and even facilitating life changing experiences…but how to make apparent and embrace NXL’s full wide reaching range of influence in this much needed local library?
The Film represents something of the library activities as a visual soundscape and mesh with hands that share, give, learn and do. But other hands emerge… for the other side of this success story for the local community, and for us, is that of threatened library closures and the loss and despair for those already closed.
