This symposium seeks to create a space for the articulation and expression of pertinent issues that feed into current debate.

Organisers: Dr. Elizabeth Williams-Goldsmiths, Dr. Akile Ahmet-London School of Economics and Political Science

Universities consider themselves liberal spaces of critical thinking. They are however, sites of power. The knowledge produced and reproduced in universities is textured by inequality because "knowledge" itself is not necessarily unbiased and unaffected by the purveyor. It can be highly racialized, gendered and infused with assumptions of class.

Current research demonstrate that race and racism are highly apparent in the space of the university. It is manifest through a range of contact from personalised micro aggression to structural and institutional racism. In recent months the university has been a contested site in Southern Africa, the United States and the UK.

There have been many flash points. This symposium seeks to create a space for the articulation and expression of pertinent issues that feed into current debate. Invited guests, institutional voices, researchers, and students will come together to explore the challenges in the twenty-first century higher education environment.

Be part of the conversation and commitment to move the dialogue forward.

Speakers include: Goldsmiths students, Dr Suki Ali, Dr Kehinde Andrews, Professor Gargi Battacharyya, Professor Kalwant Bhopal, Professor Steve Garner, Dr. Akile Ahmet, Dr. Elizabeth Williams, Dr William Henry, Claire Herbert and Dr Louise Owusu-Kwarteng, Professor Heidi Mirza and more.

Attend the accompanying photographic exhibition and evening reception at LSE.
