This two day workshop demonstrates and demystifies project management by taking you through, step by step, what you need to do at each stage to achieve success. Bring along a project you are currently working on, are stuck on, or are yet to get started!

About the workshop leader
Kate Forbes-Pitt has managed projects of various sizes in local government and Higher Education since 1991. She has lectured in Information Systems in Business & Project Management at LSE and is currently working on a research project at a University in Los Angeles. Kate brings a wealth of theoretical knowledge as well as a down-to-earth pragmatic approach to managing all types of projects whether they are large or small or cover a long or short time span.

Outline
When it comes to the everyday tasks and problems we deal with at work, the idea of using established project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 can seem like taking a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Even if we wanted to utilise them, don’t they involve skills that are overcomplicated and costly to acquire? Kate Forbes-Pitt specifically developed this two day course for HE institutions to show that all we need to learn about are the basic principles of project management to transform the way we get work done and communicate with colleagues to achieve joint tasks. The workshop demonstrates that understanding and using elements of PRINCE2 methodology can be useful in the higher education setting. The course uses examples of small HE based projects to guide participants through all sections of PRINCE2 showing its scalability. Participants leave with substantial working notes relating to their own projects.

The course consciously avoids acronyms and aims to empower people to deal with PRINCE2 in their own work, rather than have a methodology imposed upon them or bombarding and bamboozling them with terminology. On day 2, participants have the choice of working on a given example or bringing in their own project. This has proved popular as it allows participants to reframe their project in PRINCE2 terms with advice on hand should they want it and also to have space away from the pressures of their office to revisit their work with their new knowledge.

Who should attend this workshop?
This course is helpful for anyone working on small, medium or large projects. Because of its hands on approach, it is particularly suitable for participants who wish to bring a project on which they are currently working.

Outcomes
After completion of this two day workshop, participants will be able to:
• articulate what is and what is not a project and explain it to others
• adopt a ‘project’ focused approach when asked to undertake work
• manage, or be a member of, a project team with a good understanding of how each role contributes
• confidently approach planning and implementing small, medium or large projects at work
• use elements of the PRINCE2 methodology, scaled down to their own project
• when bringing their own projects to the workshop, move them on to the next stage drawing upon the experience of the course leader

Who should attend this workshop?
This course is helpful for anyone working on small, medium or large projects. Because of its hands on approach, it is particularly suitable for participants who wish to bring a project on which they are currently working.

We can also arrange for this workshop to be delivered to project teams within departments, please contact Staff Development for details.
