The good, the bad and the measurements. Everything you should know about your cholesterol and blood pressure. Join us for a drop in session on Monday 22 March in Senior Common Room.

Staff Development in conjunction with Occupational Health is pleased to invite you to another healthy bite-size session, this time tackling the issue of cholesterol and blood pressure.

We all know that maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol and blood pressure is important for our wellbeing. This session will help you to understand the difference between good and bad cholesterol, identify ways of improving cholesterol levels as well as maintaining normal blood pressure.

Did you know that…

Good cholesterol which picks up and transports surplus cholesterol from the body tissues back to the liver, where it is broken down can be found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds because these contain unsaturated fat.

Bad cholesterol, which accumulates in body tissues, such as the walls of coronary arteries can be reduced by avoiding butter, fatty meat, cakes and pastries (these contain saturated fat).

Cutting down on salt will help prevent high blood pressure which is responsible for developing coronary heart disease and heart attack.

Eating at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetable a day as well as oily fish can help to lower the amount of fat substances in your blood and help to regulate the heart rhythm.

Find out more at the session where Bruce Ormiston, Goldsmiths' Occupational Health Nurse will be on hand to help you work out your cholesterol and blood pressure measurements and if necessary to refer you to appropriate medical advice.
