The Centre for Identities and Social Justice invites you to a seminar to be given by Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties).

Director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti will be in discussion on the subject of ‘Liberty and the Law’ at Goldsmiths, University of London, on Tuesday 4 June.

The seminar, hosted by Goldsmiths’ Centre for Identities and Social Justice, will see Shami talk about the importance of fundamental rights and freedoms and the rule of law in binding society together in difficult times.

Shami was made an Honorary Fellow of Goldsmiths in 2007, and was described by the Times as 'the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years'. In the 2012 Olympic Opening ceremony she was one of eight Olympic flag holders, alongside Nobel Peace Prize winner Leyma Gbowee and Muhammed Ali.

Shami said: “When fear of poverty and terrorism stalks the land, it is so easy to see our human rights as luxuries we can ill-afford. In truth they are the precious treasures that protect humanity, bind society together and which were left to us by previous generations to hold on trust for those yet to come. Goldsmiths College is world famous as a place of creativity and culture as well as learning and logic. I cannot think of a better place to discuss how our rights and freedoms reflect and protect everything that makes life worth living.”

An experienced barrister, Shami was a part of the Home Office legal team from 1996 until 2001 for Governments on both persuasions. Since joining Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties) she has written, spoken and broadcast widely about Liberty's work on equality, human rights and the rule of law.

Aside from her role at Goldsmiths, Shami is Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, Visiting Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, and a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple. She was one of 6 independent assessors advising Lord Justice Leveson in his Public Inquiry into the Culture, Practice and Ethics of the UK Press.

This event takes place on Tuesday 4 June from 4:30pm-6pm in the Cinema, Richard Hoggart Building, and is free to attend. Please book your place by emailing m.felix@gold.ac.uk.
