Event overview
Lucia Kubalova, a Secondary School Teacher in Kent and a second year PhD student in the Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths, will give a talk at the Centre for Language, Culture and Learning.
Lucia Kubalova’s interest lies in developing deeper understanding of the ways Slovak/Roma/Gypsy students at secondary level negotiate the differences between their home cultural and educational experiences and those they encounter in England. This session draws upon almost 5 years' experience of working with these children and their families in a mixed Catholic secondary school of approximately 1,200 students in Kent.
Lucia says "I have been widely accepted by Roma families, although I am non–Roma, and I have developed trusting relationships with them. Moreover, through my teaching role in a school, I am more engaged with Slovak Roma lives. My study is of an ethnographic nature and I collect personal stories of Slovak Roma students which will assist in recognising their way of life. In this session I would like to share my findings of many paradoxes and contradictions arising amongst students and their families, teachers, the headteacher and school documentation not only in learning and teaching but also in cultural experiences and meaning making."
Lucia was born in Slovakia but her passion for travelling and desire to learn about other cultures brought her to England.
