Dr Mick Grierson is the Director, Creative Computing. Programme Leader, BSc Creative Computing , BSc Digital Arts Computing, MA/MFA Computational Arts / Computational Studio Arts.

Teaching

Dr Mick Grierson convenes undergraduate Creative and Software Projects across all years. Dr Mick Grierson also delivers courses in C++ for digital media & audio / visual signal processing at advanced and Masters level.

Dr Mick Grierson supervises students at all levels including PhD who are actively engaged in researching computational approaches to sound and visual media. This includes work from a range of perspectives that incorporates software engineering, human computer interaction, and practice-based arts research.

This includes work in any of the following areas :

  • Creative coding, audiovisual composition, image and audio signal processing / analysis, information retrieval/pattern recognition, image synthesis, algorithmic drawing, sound visualisation and data sonification, physical computing, sound/music synthesis, computational sound art, generative sound and music, instrument design, experimental cinema and computational media arts, installation art and exhibition design.
  • Real-time interaction involving any of the above topics, including games, mobile apps, installation, composition and/or performance systems, including both HCI style projects and art/design/entertainment focussed projects, or content-aware web applications.
  • Biosignals projects, particularly BCI project proposals, are also welcome, as are proposals in audio, music, visual and audiovisual perception/cognition.

Areas of supervision

Cognition and perception, computer-aided audiovisual art & composition, signal processing and segmentation, brain-computer interfaces (EEG), information retrieval, gaming, live electronics, accessibility, experimental electronic improvisation, live and experimental cinema.

Research Interests

Mick Grierson is a researcher in sound, vision and interaction technology. His involvement is central in some of the most noteworthy creative technology installations since 2010 including Christian Marclay's internationally acclaimed “The Clock”, Heart n Soul's “Dean Rodney Singers” (Part of the Paralympics Unlimited Festival), and Science Museum's “From Oramics to Electronica”.

Grierson is the founder of Goldsmiths Digital, the consultancy arm of Goldsmiths Embodied Audiovisual Interaction Group (EAVI). He advises businesses in the creative sector, helping them design and build technology hardware and software prototypes. This has led to the development of a variety of web services, wearables, computer games and other technology, including commissions by large technology companies such as SONY entertainment. Furthermore his audio & graphics software is used by a large number of high profile artists and professionals. 

Mick is a Reader at Goldsmiths Digital Studios, Goldsmiths College, and leads on a range of grants funded by Research Councils UK and the European Union. He is also Director of the Daphne Oram Collection.
