Research interests

I am a researcher on the Department’s 2005-2009 AHRC-funded ‘Benchmarking Synergy Levels within Metadesign’ project that is looking for a more comprehensive mode of design that would operate at the highest level of governance and planning. My individual doctoral research mainly focuses on the use of space within cities, although these principles may inform other systems, as described above.  I am especially interested in micro-regions that have become dislocated, neglected and under-used, in comparison to areas of a corresponding size or location. My notion of ‘awkward space’ helps to account for the way that many factors, e.g. ownership, urban flow, and social behaviour, correlate to form zones that resist the predominate flows in ordered places. My research is, therefore, partly an aesthetic inquiry into the uneven quality of ‘flow’ that visitors experience when travelling through the built environment. Where most orthodox descriptions imply that pedestrian turbulence is disagreeable or undesirable, I am developing ways to renegotiate and ‘harness’ what would otherwise be seen as ‘untidy’, unplanned spaces.
