Contemporary landscape painting

My thesis proposes to look at contemporary landscape painting, to analyse it in terms of selected writings about the inter-relationship between space and time. It also asks how the interpretation of landscape painting can be transformed by other practices not usually associated with painting. Debates about landscape have developed in spheres related more to performativity and process, sites and three-dimensional space.

I will be discussing issues related to contemporary concepts about landscape and how they may be acknowledged in painting practice. Paintings have a materiality that may embody and refer to the interrelatedness of our actual experience of place. They may also take on board the ‘discursive site’ of landscape, reflecting the questions and issues related to shifting conceptual understandings of ‘landscape’.
