The Sapphic sublime of Frederick Sommer

My current area of interest is Photography, Picturing the Sublime: Subjectivity and Realism. My initial focus, interrogating the traditional oppositional diad of realism and romanticism, through the compositional elements within atmospheric nuclear test photography, aims to problematise the position of the viewing subject in both photography and painting from Friedrich onwards, looking at relevant critiques of Kantian thought and its remaindered legacies in recent and contemporary thinking around picturing and framing.
