Computer facilities

Computer facilities

The College computer facilities are available to all students. The facilities are described fully in the IT Services Handbook, which is available on the IT Services website.

You have to register in order to use the computer facilities and services available and you’ll need to complete your online induction to the facilities. A username and password will be given to you at enrolment. If you forget your username or password, contact the Computer Help Desk on the ground floor of the Rutherford Building (tel 020 7919 7555, e-mail helpdesk@gold.ac.uk).

The main open access computer facilities are in the Rutherford Building. There are PC and Mac computers, all of which are networked and run a standard range of software applications.

Colour and mono printing facilities are available throughout the building. All printing is charged, although we try to keep the costs as low as possible.

All use of computer facilities is subject to College Regulations and to the relevant legislation under the Data Protection Act (1998), the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988), and the Computer Misuse Act (1990). See the College Regulations available on the web at www.gold.ac.uk/regulations.

E-mail
It’s important that you regularly check your Goldsmiths e-mail account, as this is where messages from your department and from other areas of the College (such as the Students’ Union or Student Services or Careers) will be sent. You’ll be given your e-mail address when you enrol.

You can access your College e-mail account both from within College and from outside using the College’s Webmail service.

There are guides to the College’s e-mail system available at the Help Desk and on the IT Services web site. If you have problems once you’ve had a look at the guides, contact the Help Desk.

All student use of e-mail is subject to the E-mail Policy for Students, which can be found online.

Wireless computing
If you have a laptop with wireless networking facilities, you will be able connect to Goldsmiths network from many locations around the campus, including the refectory and all floors of the Library. This gives access to your own files, the College e-mail system, and the internet.

Media Services

The Media Services section aims to meet all your audio-visual needs. There are two parts: the Digital Media Suite, and the Media Equipment Centre.

The Digital Media Suite, on the ground floor of the Rutherford Building, provides facilities for many media copying tasks (e.g. from DVD to DVD, from Mini-DV to DVD, from VHS to DVD, etc) and has 12 Apple Macintosh digital video editing suites utilising Final Cut Pro. Two acoustic booths are also available for audio
and post-production testing of video projects. Equipment is free to use though materials have to be paid for.

The Media Equipment Centre is based in Room 181, Richard Hoggart Building. It is responsible for the video and data presentation equipment installed in College teaching rooms and holds a loan collection of portable AV equipment, with advice on how to use the equipment

learn.gold
learn.gold is Goldsmiths Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). A VLE is a web-based software system that supports learning and teaching – it can range from making online resources available (such as reading materials, timetables, web links, animations) or facilitating the easy creation of formative assessment activities, enabling on-line discussions and allowing on-line essay submission. You log in to learn.gold using your Goldsmiths username and password.

Some academic departments have a virtual office on learn.gold, where you can download reading lists and access a range of different materials relevant to your degree programme. You can also use learn.gold to enter the Goldsmiths Social Forum, which is an online social space for Goldsmiths students, where you can ask for advice or start discussions.
