About the Warden, Patrick Loughrey
The Warden is the chief executive officer of the College. Warden is a unique title for the head of a British university where the equivalent role is normally known as Vice-Chancellor. The title of ‘Warden’ is a reminder of the founding of the College by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the City of London’s ancient Livery companies.
Patrick Loughrey joined Goldsmiths as Warden in April 2010 after working for the BBC as Director of BBC Nations and Regions since May 2000.
The Warden provides academic and administrative leadership for the University. He leads the Senior Management Team which considers major policy issues and oversees the submission of business to Council, Academic Board and Finance and Resources Committee.
Patrick is committed to enhancing the College’s reputation as a student-centred, innovative and research-led College. Having initiated the development of a new and ongoing Strategic Plan for the College, he has also overseen significant investment in services, facilities and estate. As part of being a member of the 1994 Group of smaller, research-intensive universities, Patrick serves on the 1994 Group Board and also its Chair’s Advisory Group. He is a member of Universities UK’s Longer Term Strategy Group and also the Council for Industry and Higher Education’s Taskforce. More recently he has joined a high-level HEFCE steering group for the development of the National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) at the Council for Industry in HE.
Originally from County Donegal, Ireland, Patrick studied at the University of Ulster (BA Hons Contemporary History), The Queen’s University of Belfast (MA History) and Trent University, Ontario (Doctoral Research Fellowship). He began his career as a teacher and freelance broadcaster for UTV, BBC and RTÉ (the public service broadcaster of Ireland) before joining the BBC as an education producer in 1984. For three years Patrick was Head of the BBC’s Project North. The Project includes the creation of MediaCityUK, a new city dedicated to media production in which Goldsmiths is also involved. He received the University of Ulster’s Distinguished Graduate Award in 1997 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2009. Patrick is a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster, Department of Journalism.
