Funda Ustek-Spilda

Funda Ustek-Spilda is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the ARITHMUS research project "Peopling Europe: How data make a people".

She obtained her doctorate in Sociology from the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Takehiko Kariya and Dr. Ekaterina Hertog. Her dissertation explored how the invisibility of women's informal employment in the official statistics in Turkey is shaped by prevalent gender roles and women's position in family and in society in Turkey. Against this background, she studied women workers' strategies of survival in the informal sector, when their work is largely invisible from the public gaze and socio-legal domain. Her past work also explored the puzzling educational disadvantage of second-generation migrants in Germany and Denmark (in comparison to first generation migrants).

She has conducted research on popular media programmes (esp. drama series) to investigate how they might contribute to shaping and/or reproducing public opinions and social values (intentionally or otherwise) on gender, class, religion and social justice. She has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Turkey and has used a variety of quantitative and qualitative analysis tools throughout her research.

Her broad research interests are missing people in statistics, culture/institutional change, governing by numbers and gender.
